Productive by Design: Creating Home Offices That Work

←  Back to Blog

For many Kenyans, the home office is no longer a luxury or a lockdown experiment — it's a permanent fixture of how we work. Yet most home offices are still an afterthought: a spare bedroom with a desk wedged against a wall, or a corner of the living room that was never really designed for focus. Here's how CadZone approaches a home office that genuinely works.

Dedicated vs Integrated

The first decision is whether the home office occupies its own room or is integrated into another space. A dedicated room offers privacy, better acoustic control, and a psychological boundary between work and home — but not everyone has a spare room. Integrated offices, designed into a study corner of a bedroom or living area, can work beautifully if the joinery, lighting, and acoustic treatment are handled correctly.

The Desk Setup

We design custom desk units rather than specifying off-the-shelf furniture, because the ergonomics and storage needs of every client are different. Sit-stand desk mechanisms, cable management channels built into the desktop, monitor positioning at the correct height, and task lighting that eliminates screen glare are all resolved at the design stage. These aren't small details — poor desk ergonomics lead to real physical and cognitive costs over time.

Storage and Organisation

A cluttered workspace is a cognitively expensive one. We design dedicated storage for every category of item: open shelving for reference books and objects, closed joinery for files and equipment, and drawer inserts for stationery and cables. The discipline of a place for everything comes from the design, not from willpower.

Acoustic Treatment

In open-plan homes, sound intrusion is the most common complaint about working from home. Acoustic panels, heavy curtaining, carpet or rugs underfoot, and solid-core doors all reduce noise transmission significantly. For dedicated home offices, we often incorporate fabric-wrapped acoustic panels into the wall design — elements that are both functional and visually intentional.

Video Call Backgrounds

In the era of permanent video conferencing, your background is part of your professional presentation. We design home offices with the camera angle in mind — a clean, well-lit backdrop with considered styling that communicates competence and taste without being distracting.

Your office at home should support how you work best. Get in touch and let's design a space that does exactly that.
